Occasionally, these abnormal growths (also called lesions) may be malignant. Usually there are three phases to treating these growths, the first being to perform a biopsy. This is done in the office with local anesthetic. The tissue is then sent to a pathologist for review of cellular makeup under a microscope. Most times, the results are available within a day or two. If the lesion is cancerous, patients will often be referred to a Mohs surgeon, or a dermatologic surgeon who specializes in in the removal of cancerous tumors. Once removed, Dr. McInnes will reconstruct the eyelid where the tumor was removed to restore function of the eye within a day or two of the excision.
